Big Brass is a free turn-based war game for phone and desktop, in a World War II that never happened. Pick one of six overacting commanders, build an empire, field a 3D army and race the superweapon countdown, which everyone on the map can see. It runs in the browser: no install, no account.

What you do

• Start with one city and an empty map. Send a base truck out to found the next city, and defend it while it is under scaffolding.
• Research a tech tree with 35 technologies, and upgrade every kind of unit along its own path: three levels, two choices each, and you can see the upgrades on the model.
• Command 35 kinds of units on land, at sea and in the air, from riflemen in squads that lose men as they take damage to armored trains and aircraft carriers.
• Build a superweapon. The whole map sees the countdown, so everyone knows when to panic.
• Play a 30-turn Operation for the high score, or Total War until one power is left. Six powers, five fronts, four levels of AI.
• Earn medals to rise through the ranks and unlock powers. The Weekly Operation has a leaderboard, and the server replays every submitted game to check it.
• Challenge a friend: the link opens the same map, with your score to beat.

How it's made

The rules live in a small engine with no graphics, so the server can replay a whole game to check a score. The picture on top is three.js in the browser, with 3D models, a painted-looking ground and all its sound generated in the browser, without audio files.
