Privacy
Big Brass is a turn-based war game. You do not need an account. Here is what we store, why, and what you can do about it.
Who we are
Big Brass is made by Rens and run by Avantos. Avantos is responsible for the data on this page (the controller under the GDPR). Questions or requests: rens@avantos.io.
What we count
To learn whether the game works and whether people come back, your browser keeps a random number (no name, no email). With it we count, per day: that the page was reached and the game loaded (and how long loading took), that a game was started, how far it got and how it ended (power, AI level, map, turns, score, how many upgrades you bought and how much of your army was basic infantry), how far you got in Basic Training, whether you pressed a share button, and how long the game was on your screen. We also note whether the screen is a touch screen, the type of graphics chip in your device, how smoothly the game ran (frames per second) and which link you came from (for example a code for a group of testers). If the game runs into an error, we keep the technical error message.
A link you share holds the map, your power and your score, not your name or your number. Post on X opens x.com, where X's own rules apply.
In your browser
The random number is kept in your browser's storage and in one cookie of our own (bb_dev, for 400 days), as a backup. Your browser also keeps your medals, your settings and a game in progress. We use no cookies from other companies.
Service Record
Your medals, rank and scores are backed up on our server with your random number, so you do not lose them if your browser clears its storage. If you ask for a code to move to another device, we keep that code for 24 hours.
Weekly Operation and nicknames
If you finish a Weekly Operation, your score is stored and our server replays your moves to check it. If you pick a nickname, it is shown in the ranking with your score. Without one you appear under a fun name made from your random number, such as SwiftOtter27. To stop abuse, we briefly count how many results come from one network address; we only keep a scrambled form of the address, for two days.
Why we may do this
We count plays, keep the backup and the ranking and stop abuse because we have a legitimate interest in a game that works well and is fair (GDPR article 6(1)(f)). Your nickname is based on your permission (article 6(1)(a)); you can take it back at any time, for example with the button below.
Where the data is
The game runs on Vercel (hosting) and keeps its data in Upstash (database). Both are American companies and the data is on their servers in the United States. They process it only on our behalf and are certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. Fonts and other files come from this site itself, so playing does not contact other companies.
How long we keep it
We keep data about a browser until 400 days (about 13 months) after it last visited; after that it is deleted automatically. The scrambled network address is kept for two days. Counts per day without a number, and a list of recent games and error messages without a number, we keep.
Your rights
You may ask to see your data, to correct it, to have it deleted, to limit or object to its use, and to receive it in a usable form. The button below deletes everything at once; for anything else, email rens@avantos.io. If you think we handle your data wrongly, you can complain to a data protection authority, for example the Dutch one (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) or the one in your country.
Who it is for
Big Brass is for general audiences aged 13 and up.
Delete your data
This button deletes everything our server keeps about this browser: the days you played, your Service Record, your scores and your nickname. It also removes the number, your medals, your settings and your game in progress from this browser. Counts per day without a number stay.
